Rishiri Island is located roughly 20 km west of Hokkaido
Rishiri is nearly perfectly circular with a coastline of 63 km.
The residents of Rishiri Island live on the coastal areas of the island, which are connected by bus service which circumnavigates the island.
I was in the southern part of island and enjoy watching wild landscape of coast line.
After lunch at Rishiri island, I took ferry and went to Rebun Island
The island sits 50 km off the coast of Hokkaido.
Rebun Island is known for its alpine flowers.
There is no high mountain in Rebun so why alpine flowers?
It's because of the severe weather of island.
The temperature is low during all seasons so only small flowers can grow well.
This is today's hotel.
Hotel "petit corinthian" is Greek style building with Corinthian columns and used dark wood oak panel doors and early American interior decorations.
Rebun island of far from main city of Sapporo in Hokkaido so actually there are few hotels and hotel grade is not so high.
However this hotel is exception.
You can have a excellent stay in this hotel.
The Wakkanai originally came form Ainu lungage,Yam-wakka-nay
It means cold water river.
This is Souya kyuryo area.
It has a rare geographical feature of periglacial land forms, in which moisture in the ground repeatedly freeze and melt. here are a number of pasture grounds in the area of Souya kyuryo Hill, which make good use of the geographical feature.
We had a nice drive to Japan's northernmost point, Cape Souya
You can see the Russian island of Sakhalin from here.
There is an observation tower of the former Japanese Navy left at the tip of the Cape Souya. In order to watch the movement of the Russian Baltic Fleet, the observation tower was built in 1902, when the relations between Russia and Japan worsened. The observation tower remains the public of the history that once the border area was under the state of tension.
