I visited Mashike city because this day was a autumn delicacy festival.
The festival is popular in Hokkaido and many people visit Mashike city to enjoy delicious seafood once for each year.
I enjoyed one day JR train trip to Mashike city.
Mashike city also has a lot of places to visit such as very old warehouse, herring house, and Sake brewery and nice ramen restaurant.
I could enjoy Mashike a lot !

I took a JR train from Asahikawa city and went to Machike city.
It took less than 3 hours.
On the train, I enjoyed view of countryside, seasonal delicacies with Sapporo beer.
I couldn't wait until arriving at Mashike city.

I arrived at JR Mashike station at last.
Please look at this old, tiny, local station.
There are many local JR station like this in Hokkaido.
JR Hokkaido solid policy to abolish local JR line of countryside which few people use.

JR Mashike station is the end of JR Rumoi-main line.
You can see at the end of train rail.
JR Rumoi-main line starts from Fukagawa city next to the second largest city, Asahikawa.

This is local specialty products " deep water shrimps.
Tastes is fantastic. How to eat?
You can eat row style such as "Sashimi or Sushi.
You can also boil and grill them.
My favorite style is put in the soup.
Soup stock form deep water shrimp are excellent.
Autumn is a just season for this shrimp.
We always wait for the season of deep water shrimp coming every year.

This is again, JR Mashike station.
This is very old and small.
JR Hokkaido decided to abolish this station coming this December.
I agree that this station is old and few people use but I felt disappointed because traveler usually love this kind of refined atmosphere, scenery.

In front of JR mashike station, there are very old buildings made of wood still remain.
This building used to be used as a restaurant but now used as a tourist information center of Mashike city.
I got a map and some information of city.
Now I am ready to walk.

This is old building and registered as a important cultural assets in Japan.
This was a house for rich family who succeeded with herring fishing.
100 years ago in Japan, herring had a same value as money so coastal city such as Mashike, Otaru, Rumoi and so on were prospered by herring fishing.

I visited Sake brewery, Kunimare-shuzo.
This brewery is located the northernmost brewery in Japan.
Inside the brewery many old Sake and tools are displayed.
I studied a lot.

To brew Sake is basically easy process, boiling rice and water at first, then putting special rice malt to promote fermentation,stiring, finally filtering them.
It takes so long time and important point is fresh water and how much we mill the rice.

Kunimare shuzo is a old brewery and also used as a house.
You can see a very old Japanese style structure of Japanese house.
Tatami, straw mats were placed on the ground Sho-ji, wooden sliding doors divide one room into two rooms.

This is Shinto alter.
At old style Japanese house, there must have this alter.
Shinto is our indigenous religion.
We have millions of gods related to natural phenomena such as water, wind, fire, snow and so on.
We pray for water, good harvest, and safe journey etc.

There were tasting space of Kunimare shuzo.
Kunimare is the famous bland of Japanese Sake even outside of Hokkaido and also there are many types such as dry one, sweeter one, sparkling one, non filtered one.
I tried some and got drunk.

After visiting Kunimare Sake brewery I went to Mashike autumn delicacy festival.
One the way to the place I saw nice colorful flags took on the boat.
These colorful, flashy, gorgeous flags are symbols of rich haul.

There were so many people and they were enjoying Mashike autumun delicacies.
There were also many food stands and each shop sold different meals.
It was very hard for me to decide what I eat.

Some food stands sold fresh row seafood.
There were grills on the place
People bought fresh seafood whatever they wanted and broiled with charcoal fire.
Many scallops on the grills.. Looks so yam!!!!

Staffs at the festival looked crazy busy.
They cooked fresh seafood one after another.
It seemed like that they had never run out of food orders.
I took grilled scallop, deep fried herring sandwiches, local specialty product" deep water shrimp miso soup.

This is Tanaka shoten ramen.
Taste was fabulous.
Soup consists of broth made of deep water shrimp and miso based combination.
Deep water shrimp is local specialty products of Mashike city.

もう20年近く前の話。学生時代、3月に北海道を旅行して、知床で流氷を見た。おまけに流氷の上にも乗った。 あれは、すごかった。これぞ、自然の力。 あの感動を、もう一度。 今回は、新千歳空港から網走まで、途中下車をしながら電車で行こう。 残念ながら知床まで行く時間はないが、紋別か網走でなんとか流氷を見たい。最悪、接岸していないくても、船の上からでもいい。 数日前からネットで流氷情報を日々チェック。全然見れない日も結構あるんだな、ということがわかる。 うーん、でも、運を天に任せて行ってみよう。
